The Church Hoppers
In this series of columns for LEO Weekly, Zach Nord and I visited a wide range of Louisville congregations anonymously. We weren't reviewing churches so we could bash worship— actually, we like church! But we did try to answer a serious question: "Are these congregations drawing people closer to God?"
- JUNE 2008: Steeple Chase
Installment # 1 in the Church Hoppers series. To kick things off, we visited Northeast Christian Church, St. Francis of Rome Catholic Church, and Canaan Christian Church. - JULY 2008: 2nd Presbyterian Church too highbrow for the Hoppers
We thought this congregation was (as Zach put it) too "Hoity-Toity." We also had a problem with the sermon ... - AUGUST 2008: The people are friendly, but money talks at Pleasant Grove Baptist
The Hoppers both loved the friendly atmosphere and authentic worship. Unfortunately, the folks at Pleasant Grove Baptist talked a bit too much about money. - SEPTEMBER 2008: St. Michael Orthodox awes and confuses
St. Michael succeeded in communicating a profound sense of holiness. But the Hoppers didn't understand anything else in a 90-minute worship service. - OCTOBER 2008: Worship on the web—surprisingly, it works
Online church might sound like somebody's idea of a joke, but it really exists at Lifechurch.tv. - NOVEMBER 2008: Music, marriage, and a mosh pit
Worship at New Vision Ministry Center may have been a tad overdone, but you can't argue with their passion. - DECEMBER 2008: Church of the Advent talks about hell
Hey, we didn’t bring it up: Father Timothy Mitchell put it in his sermon. Blame him. - FEBRUARY 2009: Extreme Makeover: God Edition
In the final installment of our series, the Hoppers looked back on nine very different worship experiences. Were those churches all representing the same God?
