Happily Ever After
Chances are, you wouldn't mind a little Happily Ever After in your life. It wouldn't take much—just a steady source of gold coin, a nice prince or princess to marry, and a small castle in the suburbs. But what happens when God takes away your dreams, and it seems like life has shifted into reverse? Through the story of Joseph in Genesis, we'll explore some of the things God may be trying to teach you when you're thinking hope has passed you by. "Once upon a time in the faraway land of Canaan, there lived a boy with a Technicolor® dreamcoat ... "
Biblical Text: Genesis 37, 39-41. Recommended for young adults.
Missing Person
I was about to graduate from Bible college, and I wasn't sure about anything—including the existence of God. My faith was in danger of turning to skepticism. But then one day, I went to the cemetery with my girlfriend, and amidst the gravestones, something happened that made me realize faith was worth fighting for. This message deals with the difficult subject of doubt, and challenges listeners to "choose to believe."
Biblical Text: Mark 9:14-27. Listen to this message here. Recommended for youth and adults.
Overcoming Doubt
Even John the Baptist, that mighty preacher and man of God, once had a crisis of faith. At some point in their lives, most Christians will experience doubts like John. So how can a person face the crisis head-on and return to God with a stronger faith? I offer some practical ideas for overcoming doubts that arise from honest intellectual questions, from sins that are dragging us down, and from our own tortured emotions.
Biblical Text: Matthew 11:2-6. Listen to this message here. Recommended for adults.
The First Christmas
Around the holidays, there's an unspoken expectation that we're all supposed to be jolly. But what happens when "the most wonderful time of the year" leaves you feeling empty? Maybe it's time to strip some of the sentimental gilt off the first Christmas, and rediscover the scandal of the Incarnation. God Himself spent nine months in a teenager's belly, got his diaper changed, caught the flu, and ran for his life ... on the way to being crucified for the crime of saving the world. When we rediscover the unbelievable love of Emmanuel, maybe we can find some shreds of hope, even if Christmas seems bleak this year.
Biblical Text: Matthew 1:18-25, Luke 2:1-20, Matthew 2:1-12. Listen to this message here. Recommended for adults.
Upside Down
Jesus' teachings in the Beatitudes seem like they're good for a warm fuzzy--until we realize what they really mean. Then we start to understand that he wants to turn our comfortable lives upside down. This message is full of inspirational stories and practical ideas for living out the hidden truths of Jesus' first recorded sermon.
Biblical Text: Matthew 5:1-12. Recommended for youth and adults.
From My Love
Sometimes when it seems like everyone we love is conspiring against us, we feel separated from God. Oh, we "got saved" when we were five, but somehow, we still struggle to grasp how much he loves us. We feel orphaned from loving relationships and cut off from grace. The glorious reality, however, is that we've been adopted by God as his own son or daughter! This message drives home the truth that nothing can separate us from the love of God.
Biblical Text: Romans 8:14-17, 37-39. Recommended for youth and young adults.
